Steve Perry or Sting?


 Question for my readers. Aliens take over the earth. They are about to use their advanced technology to erase from the world by the press of a button, all of the music, and any memory of any of the music, of one of these musicians: Steve Perry or Sting. 

Which one would you beg the alien overlords to spare? 

Personally, I'm gonna to try to save the music of THIS guy.

    I presume I am supposed to recognize the picture shown? But, am not certain I do. Nor do I know who Steve Perry is, although the name sounds familiar. The picture could be of Sting, but I can't be certain of that either. Something just doesn't look right. What up?

      Ditto, except that the name "Steve Perry" doesn't even sound familiar to me. We're not as hip as Christopher. (Is "hip" still the word people use?)

    The photo is Sting. As to Steve Perry, he was huge in the 1980s as the lead singer of JOURNEY. Ever heard "Don't Stop Believing"? Of course you both have. It was re-popularized by use in The Sopranoes. That was the song Tony played on a jukebox in the diner in the final scene of the final episode. Anyway -- Perry's voice is memorable (which is why that particular sing is likely going through your heads right now) but he is no Sting.

Searle: The Chinese Room

John Searle has become the object of accusations of improper conduct. These accusations even have some people in the world of academic philosophy saying that instructors in that world should try to avoid teaching Searle's views. That is an odd contention, and has given rise to heated exchanges in certain corners of the blogosphere.  At Leiter Reports, I encountered a comment from someone describing himself as "grad student drop out." I've written about Nassim Taleb on earlier occasions in this blog. I'll let you do the search yourself, dear reader, for the full background. The short answer to the question "who is Taleb?" is this: he is a 57 year old man born in Lebanon, educated in France, who has been both a hedge fund manager and a derivatives trader.
