The question for the day, how closely related are these two contentions, by MP:

1. "While tacit knowledge can be possessed by itself, explicit knowledge must rely on being tacitly understood and applied. Hence all knowledge is either tacit or rooted in tacit knowledge. A wholly explicit knowledge is unthinkable."

2. "The information in DNA could no more be reduced to the chemical than could the ideas in a book be reduced to ink and paper: something beyond physics and chemistry encoded DNA."

John Searle has become the object of accusations of improper conduct. These accusations even have some people in the world of academic philosophy saying that instructors in that world should try to avoid teaching Searle's views. That is an odd contention, and has given rise to heated exchanges in certain corners of the blogosphere.
