The division of most organized sports activity into men's and women's events did not happen as a matter of social convention entirely. We're told that 'gender' is a social convention, and sometimes that 'sex' is one as well. Well, no. Sex is a pre-social fact about the world. Here's a related point: the separation of men's and women's activities should not be compared to, say the pre Jackie Robinson Major Leagues in baseball, with their deliberate separation from the "Negro League."
