Elon Musk and Jeffrey Epstein

Isn't it past time we flush this ugly fellow out of our national politics and conversation, now? I don't mean President Trump.  For now I'll give him a bye.  The guy we need to flush at long last is ... Elon Musk. Seen in the photo here with one of his exes, the actress Talulah Riley, best known for Westworld.   Musk busted pleading to visit Pedo Island in Epstein files The world's richest man repeatedly sought to arrange a visit to "Little St James," aka Epstein's island or Lolita island. In particular, in November 2012, Epstein emailed Musk in expectation of such a visit, asking about logistics, "how many people will you be for the heli to island?"  The future head of the US Department on Government Efficiency responded, "Probably just Talulah and me. What day/night will be the wildest party on your island?" Musk had divorced Talulah in March of that year. Plainly though  they had not cut each other off entirely: they would remarry in...

The Epstein 'birthday book'

Those of you who receive my newsletter, Center and Margins , will likely at the beginning of October receive an essay (on the 'Center' side) that overlaps with the material below.  But the overlap is not repetition, and may indeed be a sort of parallax.  ---------------------------- On the Epstein matter in general, Trump is simply saying what he deems he has to say. Politically, this is a toughy for him. After all, perhaps even more than immigration/border issues, revulsion about pedophilia and elite conspiracy are what has gotten him where he is. During his first campaign, in 2016, the emails of John Podesta, a Clinton family advisor, were leaked to the public (through Russian efforts) and one circle of theorists decided they were all written in a secret code that when decoded detailed Podesta’s involvement with a child-abuse ring. There is no evidence of this, the ‘code’ was something the theorists made up. This soon led to a bizarre story about the basement of a Washingto...

Ricky Gervais

" You could binge-watch the entire first season of  After Life  instead of watching this show. That’s a show about a man who wants to kill himself because his wife dies of cancer, and it’s still more fun than this. Spoiler alert: Season 2 is on the way, so in the end, he obviously didn’t kill himself. Just like Jeffrey Epstein." Groans from audience "I know he was a friend of yours. I don't care."  In our moment of Gervais appreciation, it is well to remember that the "suicide" death of Jeffrey Epstein came three weeks after another "suicide" attempt. After that latter effort, Epstein was supposed to have been put on suicide (though not apparently on "suicide") watch.  There were, when Gervais spoke, plenty of reasons to believe him literally right. Epstein was murdered. But the case became stronger a short time AFTER that Golden Globe ceremony, when the major news organizations all carried stories that the footage taken ...

Epstein's "Suicide" -- Still Not the Right Word

Time has put some distance between the ever-urgent "now" and the death of Jeffrey Epstein, from an "apparent" suicide in a jail cell. With the benefit of dispassion, and hindsight, let us look back at that. The points that pop to mind are these: 1. This was a man with documented connections to two Presidents and a member of the British royal family; 2. Who had attempted suicide once before while in custody 3. Had been placed on suicide watch 4. But then strangely suicide watch was lifted 5. The ME performed the autopsy the day after his death, but hung onto the report for several days thereafter 6. ... only to disclose when she did release it that he had broken the bones in his neck in multiple places, something a good deal more common in murders than in actual suicides and 7. His death came just hours after the release of a lot of previously sealed court documents, as reporters on this beat were combing through them. Most like a hack Hollywood writer...

A Thought About Marvin Minsky

One day before the sudden death of Jeff Epstein (I refuse to call it a suicide before evidence to that effect is made public), one heard of the unsealing of a lot of the records that led to Epstein's imprisonment and so, likely, through one causal link or another, to his death. THAT material, unsealed, showed that the late Marvin Minsky, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was one of the clients to whom Epstein allegedly trafficked underaged girls. Minsky can no longer be hurt by this disclosure. He has been dead for three years. It is worth saying here too what I said in connection with John Searle not long ago, although the two are on opposite sides of at least one philosophically important debate:  No wrong Minsky may have committed diminishes the value of his contributions to cognitive science, philosophy of mind, and related fields. Minsky was on the faculty at MIT from 1958 until his death, which is a heck of a time to stay at one job. He was a pionee...
