Random thoughts about the news from New York City

I believe several Mayors of the city of Waterbury, Connecticut, have been indicted. Some have served time.  There are protocols for this in Waterbury. Regular training for what to do when the federal marshalls show up and want to speak to the Mayor.  Nobody who grew up in Connecticut is all that impressed with the indictment of Mayor Adams in the city to our southwest.  One neat thing about the indictment though, is that they don't play the cutesy games other indictments do when they are made public. The bill of indictment is readily available.  In fact, I'll just give you the link in case you haven't come across it elsewhere. https://www.justice.gov/d9/2024-09/u.s._v._adams_indictment_1.pdf But what do I mean by "cutesy games"? The anonymization of terms with pretty obvious referents. Some US Attorneys would have referred to "Country Number 1" yet made it obvious what country was referenced. Maybe with a reference to a waterway that rhymes with the word...

A Cutback

Dear Readers: Enjoyable as my time spent here is, I do have to make a cutback, at least through the end of 2020. So this is your notice that I will only be posting twice a week, not the four that has been my custom. Starting immediately. The two posts will come up on each Thursday and each Sunday. All I wish to say after THAT is something I should have said back in June. A journalist who died because she dared probe the crookedness of Malta's ruling received a tribute in June of this year, about three years after her demise.   https://www.fraud-magazine.com/cover-article.aspx?id=4295010544 Her name was Daphne Caruana Galizia. I believe I have told her story before. She was the author of the influential blog Running Commentary and a regular columnist in The Sunday Times of Malta. She met her demise  on October 16, 2017, when someone detonated a car bomb within her vehicle. This year, her son, Matthew, accepted on her behalf an award from the Association of Certi...

Bobby Baker

In a forthcoming review on Caro's new book -- the fourth volume of THE YEARS OF LYNDON JOHNSON -- I summarize some of what Caro has to say about Bobby Baker. The Baker anchor was an important aspect of the Johnson VP and early Presidential years, at least as Caro is reconstructing them, and some of Caro's other reviewers seem to have said nothing or far too little about it. That review should appear in the next issue of The Federal Lawyer. Meanwhile, I've discovered that I wrote something about Caro once before. I'm the author of a book on the political history of the US Supreme Court, from the New Deal era to the George H.W. Bush presidency. In that context I mentioned Baker. It introduced my book's first invocation of the concept of executive privilege. I'll just quote that passage here: Early in 1964 the Senate opened a formal inquiry into allegations of influence peddling brought against Bobby Baker, Johnson's longtime friend and former aid...
