Been watching episodes of Brotherhood

Brotherhood is a Showtime series about life in Providence, Rhode Island. It turns out to be somewhere between The Sopranos and The Wire, with perhaps a little bit of Breaking Bad thrown in. If you enjoyed any or all of those three series, you might also like this one. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brotherhood_(American_TV_series) By the way, for those of you who make have notices that I didn't have a blog post on the Super Bowl this year: you're right. I decided there is no way I can add value to any casual TV viewer's existing understanding of the event this year. Glad you got by without me.

Block Island Events

I'm looking (not for any good reason) at THE BLOCK ISLAND TIMES for July 18th, 2015. Block Island, as many of my readers surely know, is a summer tourist haven off the southern coast of Rhode Island, with wonderful beaches and fishing, and some fascinating Native history/archaeology. Because I'm feeling lazy, I'll let you know what events there were advertised in the newspaper above referenced. A four week discussion series is underway there of a new theological work entitled DID GOD KILL JESUS? SEARCHING FOR LOVE IN HISTORY'S MOIST FAMOUS EXECUTION by Tony Jones. The book is to be discussed every Thursday beginning with July 18th at Harbor Church. Also, there was an opening reception at the Spring Street Gallery showing the work of Kate Bird. I've included a photo of that artist here. There is a summer concert series underway, featuring such musicians as Martin Soderberg, vocalist Megan Bisceglia, singer/songwriter Kevin Briody, and pianist/cellist Jonath...

The Narragansett Rune Stone

Back in the mid 1980s, the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission came into possession (I'm not sure how) of a large chunk of sandstone (7 feet wide, 5 feet high, 2.5 feet deep) on which were carved the above symbols, some of which at least were ancient Norse characters. The sandstone thus came to be known as the Quidnessett Rock, or the Narragansett Rune Stone, and impressed experts on the Norse/Viking presence in North America as authentic . The stone was apparently stolen from the RIHPHC in 2012, then recovered by law enforcement in 2013. This caused a flurry of press coverage and that in turn brought forward Everett Brown. Brown now claims that he carved the stone, 50 years ago, thus some 20 years before its discovery. He was a 13 year old kid in 1964, fascinated by Vikings and skilled at carving -- he was also a kid whose family vacationed each summer on the Rhode Island coast. He had too much time on his hands  and access to his fathe...
