Excitement in the air

 


I don't know about you, dear reader, but there are some of us who feel some excitement on the morning of 'decision days' in June.  

The US Supreme Court is typically trying to clear its dockets ahead of its summer break, and this is when the hotly contested cases and the publicly most awaited make their appearance. Hence the fun.  "Is today the day they release their birthright citizenship decision? or a re-affirmation of central bank independence? or the weapons-for-the-stoners case?"

Last Thursday did turn out to be the day for the weapons-for-stoners case. That came out right, as far as concerns the parties directly involved, though the precedential significance seems to be small. This morning? It is another announced decision day and the excitement is back.

Okay, nerdy perpetual law student fun....

    I agree that using marijuana is not a good reason to deny someone the right to have a gun. A better reason is that guns kill people and therefore should be banned as to everyone, not only marijuana users.

      I'm just wondering whether we'll soon have public service ads with a slogan like "Don't pack heat while stoned."

A Story About Coleridge

This is a quote from a memoir by Dorothy Wordsworth, reflecting on a trip she took with two famous poets, her brother, William Wordsworth, and their similarly gifted companion, Samuel Taylor Coleridge.   We sat upon a bench, placed for the sake of one of these views, whence we looked down upon the waterfall, and over the open country ... A Quote from Parfit

Recently  I wrote a little about ethicist Derek Parfit. I've been doing further research on him since, and will now describe his Big Picture as I've come to understand it. Parfit believes that the western world only started taking ethical philosophy seriously (as a domain separate from theology) around the time Nietzsche declared that God was dead. There are only three possibilities, in terms of the God/morality issue: 1) You believe that God exists and that His commands define morality 2) You deny that God exists and, like Nietzsche, infer from this that in the absence of commands there is no right or wrong, or 3) You deny that God exists yet persist in believing and attempting to discern right and wrong.
